Bringing Hollywood to Birmingham through education, training and presence.

On The Set teaches the full realm of filmmaking to kids between the ages of 8 to 18. The campers go on location and are placed on a live action set to shoot a short film that stars a real Hollywood Actor! They literally are given full responsibility of each element of film production, while being supervised by a professional. Once the film is ready to be shown, Bright House Networks presents a RED Carpet Premiere and Awards Show! There is no other summer camp that offers the entire process of filmmaking on this level!

ON THE SET

On The Set Summer Film Camp is presented by Peep This Actors/Directors Guild which is a 501 (C) 3 non-profit organization. The mission of The Actors/Directors Guild is to serve as a public laboratory for showcasing academic year and summer professional training & research in film, theater and music for Birmingham and the State of Alabama youths. It is our purpose to be a vital community resource by providing creative and accessible programs through which young people have the opportunity to experience meaningful development in a safe and accepting environment. The idea of creating a summer camp that teaches filmmaking emerged after the premiere of the feature Magic City. “So many people approached us after the film and expressed the desire to have their kids learn to do what we do – which is make films,” says David Tucker, Jr. (Executive Director). “The idea was born that night.” On The Set Summer Film Camp is a youth program that teaches the full realm of film production. The summer camp begins with textbook teachings of key elements of production, such as cinematography, lighting, sound, script writing, acting and producing. The campers are given booklets to take notes and diagram material on each section to study for reviews.

After reviewing each section, campers are allowed to participate in demonstrative activities prior to dissecting the script for preproduction. Once the theme of the script is discussed and the objective is understood, each scene of the movie is then outlined for production needs and placed on a shooting schedule according to location and scene prerequisites. The campers are then divided into teams, which consist of a director, a producer, an equipment operator, a production assistant and a slate operator for scene production and competition. The campers that are interested in acting are auditioned for primary roles in the short film. The campers go on location to produce, direct, shoot and act in starring roles of the short film. They are observed by the instructors during the entire process to be awarded in the categories of “Best Director”, “Best Producer”, “Best Actor/Actress” and “Best Crew Member”. The film is premiered at a local Birmingham theater (which consist of a Red Carpet entrance for the campers and Awards Show) and then broadcast to various cities around the country through Bright House Networks. The entire program (including behind the scenes footage) reaches over 2 million viewers through this cable network.

 Action in the Community

One of the primary objectives of On The Set Summer Film Camp is to enlighten the youths of Birmingham on the skills, techniques and studies of movie making in an attempt to reach the goal of creating a clear path to becoming a successful writer, producer, cinematographer, production crew member or actor in the video/film industry.  On The Set Summer Film Camp utilizes proven professionals as instructors and mentors during the learning process. In previous years, our campers displayed a clear understanding of the process by effectively carrying out their assigned duties. The successful completion of those projects are confirmation that our method of isolating each step of the course of action should be a continued practice for every summer. It is our plan to reach higher and higher each year for the very best mentors and instructors for our summer camp to stay relevant and competitive; and most importantly expose our kids to the paramount of what this industry has to offer.

"I often heard young people in our area express the desire to become filmmakers, but didn't know where to begin. I wanted to be a resource; a link to the beginning of someone's dream coming true."- David Tucker
